History of the American Board of General Practice

A 501(c)(6) Non-Profit Examining and Certifying board, called the American Board of General Practice ( ABGP ), was formed in 1995. This board was organized as part of a movement of physicians called the "General Practice Movement", and was formed as the result of a declaration that was issued, which set forth the philosophical foundation for the need for a general practice examining and certifying board.

The American Board of General Practice is accredited and recognized by a 501(c)(6) non-profit professional society of physicians, called the American Academy of General Physicians ( AAGP ). This accreditation and recognition occurred at official meetings of the members of the American Academy of General Physicians.

Under the Standard Primary Pathway that leads to board certification by the American Board of General Practice, the American Board of General Practice utilizes the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine ( ACGM ). The American College of General Medicine and the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine have also been accredited and recognized by the American Academy of General Physicians. This accreditation and recognition also occurred at official meetings of the members of the American Academy of General Physicians.

Within the American Board of General Practice, are two boards. The first, of these boards, is the Board of Certifiers. The second, of these boards, is the Board of Examiners.

The function of the Board of Certifiers of the American Board of General Practice is to over-see all aspects of the American Board of General Practice that pertains to the process of evaluations, examinations, testing and certifications. All of the physicians, who sit on the Board of Certifiers of the American Board of General Practice, are diplomates of member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Some of the ABMS boards, from which at least one of these physicians has obtained certification, include the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Board of Urology and the American Board of Surgery.

The purpose of the Board of Examiners of the American Board of General Practice is to over-see the examination process of the American Board of General Practice and to conduct the oral exams of the American Board of General Practice. All of the physicians, who sit on the Board of Examiners of the American Board of General Practice have completed traditional residencies in various areas of medicine, including Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Trauma Surgery and Emergency Medicine. All of the physicians, who sit on the Board of Examiners of the American Board of General Practice, have strong feelings in favor of the general practice of medicine.

The American Board of General Practice conducted its first exam in the late 1990s in St. Louis Missouri. The American Board of General Practice has conducted exams in other locations, such as Chicago, New York City, Seattle, Las Vegas and Atlanta.

The American Board of General Practice has conducted over 300 examinations of physicians and continues to maintain high standards in its examinations and certifications.

The awards of certification that are issued by the American Board of General Practice state that the physician has been designated board certified in the general practice of medicine and surgery. Once a physician has received such an award, he/she is listed in the "Search Physician's Status" section of the website of the American Board of General Practice and his/her designation is also listed.
